Mix Up the Summer Shandy

Mix Up the Summer Shandy

Posted by Bouquet of Beer on Jul 13th 2020

Summertime is all about backyard barbeques, swimming and hanging out with friends and family. Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, we can still enjoy these months with an ice cold, refreshing drink.

And the summer shandy is the iconic summertime beer. The shandy began sometime around the 1850s as the "shandy gaff," a beer and ginger ale drink that quickly became a British favorite. Over the years, it's been transformed many times, using citrus sodas and still or sparkling lemonade. There's also a German counterpart, the radler, which tends to use grapefruit soda.

Today, the basic summer shandy recipe is nothing more than equal parts of beer and lemonade. Lager, pilsners, and wheat ales are among the most popular beers to pour, though any of your favorite brews can work just as well. Have some fresh-squeezed lemonade in the fridge and you can enjoy the shandy all summer long!

But it’s 2020 and there’s nothing typical about this year – so why not mix up the traditional shandy with some other summertime flavors such as watermelon, pineapple, orange, cherry, or raspberry? Whatever your fruit of choice, try adding it to a refreshing shandy, ale, or lager for a new summertime favorite. Add a little seltzer water for a bubbly finish or a splash of lemonade for that sweet tang and you’ll feel like you’re in the tropics. The perfect summer getaway when we can’t really get away.

Whether you spend the weekend with friends and family at the pool, or you’re relying on technology to stay in touch these days, enjoying your favorite refreshing beverage makes the day a little more enjoyable.
